To this date July 16, 2006, this is the only work done here in California by the noted Architect and Engineer Santiago Calatrava. A light, well proportioned pedestrian bridge across the Sacramento River, in Redding, California.

I took these pictures during my trip to Redding in September 2005.

andresalvador > This bridge was designed so no vertical supports touches the water to disrupt the salmon run during the spawning season. It was also designed with clear glass floor so that sunlight can go through throughout the day and the shadow on the water is minimized.This view was taken from the south end.

andresalvador > Taken underneath the bridge when the sun was almost overhead. The bridge cast minimal shadow on the water because of the glass floor and because of the brige cross section which is wedge shape to eliminate more shadows. The bridge problem is maintenance related. At springtime the spiders are all over the bridge structures trapping bugs and they all stick to the structure. It is very noticeable on this photograph. The area beyond at water level is a promenade for small programs. When I was here a small art class was being conducted.

andresalvador > This view shows very clearly the shadow on the ground. Since the water is at a lower level the shadow is narrower and will not stay that way long as the sun shifts over.

andresalvador > Phot was taken at sunset. The lights under the floor has not turned on yet.

andresalvador > As it gets darker, the bridge gets more crowded as it now becomes a meeting place of the community.
