LASSEN VOLCANIC PARK : Native Americans inhabited the Lassen Peak area thousands of years ago. Prehistoric Indians had crossed the land bridge between Asia and North America during the ice ages as long as 70,000 years ago. There were about 103 separate tribes speaking 21 distinctly different languages in California during the eighteenth century, before the Europeans arrived. Archaeological surveys indicate that the Lassen Park area was used regularly by the Native people since habitation and work sites have been found throughout the park. A relatively large tribe called the Maidu, which still exist today, occupied large areas on the east and south side of the park in a meadowed area that now lies beneath Lake Almanor.
Today Lassen Park is located in an area that is somewhat sparsely populated with relatively light travel, giving one the feeling of being in a national park twenty to thirty years ago. With approximately 150 square miles and more than 106,000 acres, the numerous hiking and backpacking trails in Lassen Volcanic National Park are full of natural history. Replete with vast forests, mountain streams, fascinating geothermal features, and breathtaking views, the park offers historic and cultural displays and demonstrations to suit a wide variety of interests.
May 1914 marked the beginning of a 7-year cycle of volcanic eruptions for what was Lassen Peak. The surrounding landscape was greatly altered by the reawakening of this volcano. The park is a show case of volcanic phenomena such as hot springs, steaming f umaroles, boiling mudpots, and sulfurous vents. The Lasssen geothermal area includes the Sulphur Works, Bumpass Hell, Little Hot Springs Valley, Boiling Springs Lake, Devils Kitchen and Terminal Geyser. Proclaimed as Lassen Peak and Cinder Cone National Monuments May 6, 1907; made part of Lassen Volcanic National Park when established on Aug. 9, 1916.

JAPANESE TEA GARDEN, GOLDEN GATE PARK, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA : The Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park is the type of Japanese garden known as a wet walking garden, although it has a Zen garden, or dry garden area as well. The Japanese Tea Garden was first developed as the Japanese Village at the 1894 Cali1fornia Midwinter International Exposition, or World's Fair, which was held in the area that is now the Music Concourse. Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States.

John McLaren, who is credited with much of the overall design and development of Golden Gate Park, was approached by Makoto Hagiwara, a wealthy Japanese landscape designer, with the idea of converting the temporary exhibit into a permanent section of the park.

This garden is fronting Hagiwara Drive in Golden Gate Park. All pictures taken on August 2006.

GOLDEN GATE PARK, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA : Golden Gate Park is bigger than New York's Central Park, and has over one million trees, nine lakes, several fly casting pools and a lily pond within its borders. Golden Gate Park is the ultimate haven away from urban chaos, was deeded to the people in 1870 out of the prescient notion that San Franciscans would one day feel overcrowded. This foresight proved invaluable, as 75,000 people now visit the park on an average weekend.

SHASTA LAKE, CAVERNS AND DAM : Shasta Lake is a reservoir created by the building of Shasta Dam in California, USA. Shasta Lake is the third-largest lake in California, after the Salton Sea and Lake Tahoe, with a capacity of 4,552,000 acre-feet (5.6 km³). Ten miles (16 km) north of the city of Redding, with the town of Lakehead its northern shores, Shasta Lake is popular for boating, water-skiing, camping, and fishing. Formed by the damming of the Sacramento River, Pit River, McCloud River and several smaller tributaries, the lake boasts 365 miles (587 km) of mostly steep mountainous shoreline covered with tall evergreen trees and manzanita. Maximum depth is 517 ft. Known as the keystone of the Central Valley Project, outflow from Shasta Dam provides electricity and irrigation for widespread areas of California below the dam as well as flood control for the Sacramento River during the rainy season.
