Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is located approximately 100 kilometres south of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and is about 45 kilometres east of the Milk River Community. The park itself straddles the Milk River. It is one of the largest areas of protected prairie in the Alberta park system and has been nominated by the Government of Canada as a World Heritage Site.
The Milk River Valley was inhabited by the Blackfoot Indians thousand of years ago. These natives probably created much of the rock carvings (petroglyphs) and paintings (pictographs). Other native groups such as the Shoshone also travelled through the valley and may have also created some of the art.
