HONGKONG, CHINA : The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Macau, and one of the richest cities in the world. The territory, comprising of over 260 islands, is commonly known as Hong Kong, which was often written Hongkong in older English texts. The Hong Kong Government officially changed the name of Hongkong to Hong Kong on 3 September 1926.

Hong Kong is situated on the eastern banks of the Pearl River Delta on the southeastern coast of the People's Republic of China, facing the South China Sea in the south and bordering Guangdong Province in the north. Boasting the world's most liberal economy and being a global centre of finance and trade, Hong Kong is China's richest region in terms of GDP per capita and gross metropolitan product figures.

Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 until the People's Republic of China resumed the exercise of sovereignty in 1997. It is governed as a special administrative region under the Basic Law of Hong Kong, the territory's constitution. Under the terms of the Sino-British Joint Declaration and Basic Law, Hong Kong will retain a relatively high degree of autonomy until at least 2047, fifty years after the transfer of sovereignty. Under China's "One Country, Two Systems" policy, Hong Kong maintains its own legal system, currency, customs policy, cultural delegation, international sport teams, and immigration laws while the PRC represents the territory in diplomatic and military affairs.

QUFU, CHINA : In China's Shandong Province, Qufu is a small, rural Chinese town with an ancestral temple, a family cemetery, and the mansion of a family clan that did well in Chinese history - the Kong clan. On the face of it, that makes the town noteworthy only in how usual it is.

But Qufu is different. Because the family in Qufu is the Kong family. And their ancestral temple is to Master Kong. Kong Fu Zi, in Chinese. And that name, along with the title, became anglicized as "Confucius." Qufu was the home town of Confucius.

The town of Qufu has three basic attractions: the Temple (built around the house that Confucius grew up in), the "Forest" (the Kong family cemetery where over 100,000 of Confucius' descendants have been buried in the last 2500 years), and the Ming-era mansion compound where the descendants of Confucius lived a nobility.

The temple itself is the largest Confucian temple in the world.

It dates to 478 BC and takes up a fifth of the town's area. Fifty-three stele tablets have been erected by emperors there over the centuries. The temple's 466 buildings cover 22 hectares of land, making it one of the largest architectural complexes left from ancient China -- comparable to Beijing's Forbidden City or Chengde's summer resort.

SHANGHAI, JINAN AND GUANGZHOU, CHINA : SHANGHAI: This city is situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, is the largest city of the People's Republic of China and the eighth largest in the world. Widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern economy, the city also serves as one of the most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers of China. Administratively, Shanghai is a municipality of the People's Republic of China that has province-level status. JINAN: Jinan is a sub-provincial city and the capital of Shandong province, People's Republic of China. Located in western Shandong, it borders Liaocheng to the southwest, Dezhou to the northwest, Binzhou to the northeast, Zibo to the east, Laiwu to the southeast and Tai'an to the south.

GUANGZHOU: Today, as it has been for a millennium or more, Guangzhou is overcrowded. About four million people live in the city, almost seven million in the metro area. It is an overcrowding that has served the Chinese world well. For living in and around an international port, the Cantonese eventually decide that maybe life would be better elsewhere -- outside China. The result is some 20 million Cantonese living in places like Malaysia, Vietnam, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
