Travel: Greece Galleries

SANTORINI, GREECE : Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km south-east from Greece's mainland. It is also known as Thera or Thira, forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km² (28 mi²). It is comprised of the Municipality of Thíra and the Community of Oía. They have a total land area of 90.623 km², which also includes the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiani (all part of the Municipality of Thira).

This is our (my wife and I) second time in Santorini. The first time we wandered around the Fira. That will explain why I only have a few pictures of Fira in this gallery. These photographs were taken on September 2007.

ACROPOLIS AREA, ATHENS, GREECE : The Acropolis of Athens is the best known acropolis (high city, The "Sacred Rock") in the world. Although there are many other acropolises in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as The Acropolis without qualification. The Acropolis was formally proclaimed as the pre-eminent monument on the European Cultural Heritage list of monuments on 26 March 2007. The Acropolis is a flat-topped rock which rises 150 m (490 ft) above sea level in the city of Athens. It was also known as Cecropia, after the legendary serpent-man, Kekrops or Cecrops, the first Athenian king.

The photographs shown here were taken in the year 2000 and 2007.
