andresalvador > Taken while I was standing in front of the portico of the Pantheon. I saw this group of women conversing on the steps of the fountain base framed by the horse drawn carriage.

andresalvador > This is one of the statues within nitches around the cylindrical wall.
andresalvador > A closer view of the main altar. A Madonna and Child made of glass mosaic is behind and above it.
andresalvador > A closer look at the interior side where the dome meets the cylindrical wall that supports it.
andresalvador > The oculus is 7.8 meters in diameter. Rain and snow occasionally fall through it, but the floor is slanted and drains cleverly removing the water if it manages to hit the floor. In practice, rain seldom falls inside the dome.

The giant dome that dominates the interior is 43.30 meters or 142 feet in diameter (for comparison, the White House dome is 96 feet in diameter). The Pantheon stood as the largest dome ever until Brunelleschi's dome at the Florence Cathedral of 1420-36. It's still the largest dome in the world that is made of masonry. Some literatures though say that it is made of cast concrete.
andresalvador > Several monumental tombs are set into the walls of Pantheon like this one, including that of the artist Raphael. Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of a unified Italy, and his successor, Umberto I, are interred here as well.
